Blazers
Forward Rasheed Wallace is urging the Portland community to give
their time as a mentor for troubled youth through Committee Partners
for Youth (CPY), a specialized program that pairs adults with teens
ages 13-14.
Wallace
last year completed a public service announcement for the CPY program,
asking the public to make a commitment to the program by serving
as a mentor. The PSA features music composed by Wallace and
was distributed to radio stations throughout the metro area.
This
fall, CPY launched its sixth year of working with highly at-risk
eighth graders from three southeast Portland Middle Schools.
While it is past the date for accepting new mentors, the program
is always urgently seeking volunteers to help in any capacity throughout
the year. In Portland, one in four youth drop out of high
school and a significant number of eighth graders never even make
it into high school. The youth served by CPY have been identified
as "one foot out the door."
In
working with schools, families and youth over the last six years,
the CPY program has become known for its success assisting particularly
challenged teens. Every volunteer has extensive training which
started in late September.
Please
call 731-8797 if you would like more information about any volunteer
opportunities. Thanks to Rasheed for his time and efforts
to aid CPY this year!
