FOOD DRIVE PROGRAM
MEDIA ADVISORY

WHO: Rasheed Wallace, Portland Trail Blazers
WHAT: The Rasheed A. Wallace Foundation’s 1999 "WE CARE FOOD DRIVE" competition.
WHEN: Food collection dates were Monday, November 1 to Monday, November 15, 1999.
WHERE: 9 Philadelphia high schools were willing to take your non-perishable food donations. Each school picked their own designated helpers.

  1. Northeast High School – Cottman & Algon Avenues
  2. Roxborough High School – Ridge Avenue & Fountain Street
  3. Martin Luther King High School – Stenton Avenue & Haines Street
  4. Olney High School – Front Street & Duncannon Avenue
  5. Simon Gratz High School – 18th Street & Hunting Park Avenue
  6. Edison High School – Front & Luzerne Streets
  7. University City High School – 36th & Filbert Streets
  8. Benjamin Franklin High School – Broad & Green Streets
  9. South Philadelphia High School – Broad Street & Snyder Avenue

WHY: In an effort to stem the tide of hunger, feed those less fortunate individuals and families in our community and foster a sense of community pride amongst our students, we endeavored to collect non-perishable food items at nine (9) local area high schools. The collected items were donated to the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank and other relief agencies for distribution to families and individuals throughout the Philadelphia region.

NOTE:Each school received $500 just for participating! The winning school, Simon Gratz was notified of their win during the press conference on Thursday, November 18, 1999 by Rasheed. Rasheed also presented Gratz High School with 50 tickets to the Blazers’/76ers’ game.

Amazingly enough through all the excitement, everyone was able to have their picture taken with Rasheed and his wife Fatima.
